Assigning Integrations to Workspaces and Categories

2 min read

Every integration in Ex.Brain must be assigned to a Block Category and one or more Workspaces during setup. This ensures the imported data is:

  • Organized and searchable
  • Permissioned correctly
  • Usable by Ex.Brain in the right business context

This page explains exactly how this assignment works and how to update or edit it later.

What Is a Block Category? #

A Block Category is a folder or label used to group Blocks (datasets) by type or business function, such as “Finance,” “HR,” or “Inventory.”

Assigning an integration to a category helps:

  • Control who can access it (via Access Levels)
  • Keep your data organized by topic or department
  • Allow Ex.Brain to prioritize or group answers based on category

Example: QuickBooks data should go under “Finance Reports,” and Google Calendar data might be best under “Scheduling & Meetings.”

If you operate multiple locations or brands, this step is critical for clean data control

Where to Assign These Values During Integration Setup #

When you connect an integration (see Page 2), the popup form includes:

  • A dropdown list of Block Categories
  • A multi-select list of Workspaces

How to Edit After Connecting #

If you selected the wrong category or workspace during setup:

  1. Go to Block Management → Block Inventory
  2. Find the integration-generated Block
  3. Click Edit (pencil icon)
  4. Update the Category or Workspace fields
  5. Click Save

Changes will immediately update AI access, search filters, and permissions

Best Practices #

  • Use the same category for similar integrations (e.g., all finance apps under “Finance Reports”)
  • Only assign Workspaces that actually need access to the data
  • If you’re unsure, start narrow and expand later—fewer permissions = better security
